About Us
Why do we exist?
The SCC exists “to promote the effectiveness of the pastoral and teaching ministries of school chaplains and of others involved in similar ministries”. (From our Constitution.) We operate on a voluntary basis as a committee elected from the membership at our AGM. We work closely with The Bloxham Project and seek to serve the national community of school chaplains in a variety of ways.
What do we do?
- We maintain this website which provides a contact point for those seeking information about school chaplaincy. It also provides our members with an opportunity to share resources.
- We offer members a mechanism for developing supportive contacts with each other.
- We produce a journal, The Encyclical, which may include papers from our most recent conference, along with articles by, and of interest to, those engaged in chaplaincy.
- In association with The Bloxham Project we organise an annual conference at Trinity College, Oxford to which we invite speakers whom we hope will both affirm and challenge us; we share our experiences in both formal and informal settings; we worship together and we enjoy good food and good company.
- We organise training days both for those considering ministry as school chaplains and also for those already in post
- We attempt to raise the profile of school chaplaincy as a primary context for the Church’s ministry and mission
How are we organised?
The committee works under the guidance of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s appointed bishop, who at present is the The Right Reverend Lindsay G Urwin OGS. The association is run on a voluntary basis, by chaplains and for chaplains. The committee is made up of elected members (elected at the AGM, which takes place during the annual conference), who serve for a term of 3 years, and for no more than 2 consecutive terms.
